aRoma is a coffee and tea piazza set inspired by ancient Roman architecture. I wanted to create an entertainment set that adapted the unique structural forms and motifs of Roman architecture into distinct yet functional pieces.

The 5 elements of the set include: the coffee pot (inspired by the Roman Pantheon), the teapot (inspired by the Temple of Vesta), the sugar bowl and spoon (inspired by the Roman Colosseum), the creamer (inspired by the Torre de Hercules), and the tray (inspired by the Roman city layout of Timgad).

Process

Our goal for this project was to conceptualize, design, and prototype a set for entertaining; either a coffee and tea piazza or a bar mixing set. The Design set should include 5 elements, all of which should reinforce our formal and conceptual approach.

After some ideating, I eventually stumbled upon the idea to use ancient Roman architectural forms as the basis for my coffee and tea piazza set. After doing some research on some buildings that lined up with the forms and sizes that I wanted for each element, I settled on the idea.

Prototyping

For prototyping, we had to choose one element to create full scale. I eventually decided on the sugar bowl, which I had modeled after the iconic Roman Colosseum. For the sugar bowl, I wanted to make sure that it was entirely functional while still retaining its original iconic form.
